Seiko’s Prospex Save the Ocean series is a complete list of high quality, durable dive watches with a high but serious aim. Launched in 2018, the capsule collection is regularly updated with a new sea-inspired theme. Proceeds from sales will be dedicated to supporting various marine conservation initiatives. New this year is an interpretation of the 1965 dive watch loved by many. So this particular Prospex watch ranks high on the altruism scale, but how does it stand up to real life adventures and wear and tear?

To test Seiko’s Prospex Save the Ocean Special Edition, we reached out to Nick LaVecchia, an accomplished photographer with a passion for nature. Nick LaVecchia grew up with a fascination for the sea – swimming, sailing, surfing – and all things outdoors. As he traveled from adventure to adventure, photography became a storytelling tool to which he was naturally drawn.

LaVecchia spends more time in the water than on land; His most recent work is photographing different types of algae in the Atlantic. He also prioritizes comfort, style and ease of use when it comes to his timepieces – who better to test a Seiko Prospex? To document the thrill and the hot shots, we followed LaVecchia in Maine as he tested this watch.

Q: Describe your approach to photography?

Nick LaVecchia: I’ve always taken the less is more approach and put in more time Think about pictures before I go to make this special one. Thoughtful and minimalist with a deep appreciation for nature, light and composition.

Q: What inspires you about Maine’s rugged landscape?

A: I am constantly inspired by the beautiful and rugged landscape here: how the four seasons can shape and transform this landscape throughout the year. That’s what keeps me visually in awe. Without the changing of the seasons I would be lost.

Q: What do you love most about photographing the ocean?

A: The sea is my second home. It’s always changing…so many moods and endless textures. I live to experience a huge winter storm on the ocean: blowing snow with a big angry sea, my camera, wetsuit and no tourists. That’s it.

Q: You are currently photographing kelp. Are you working on a series?

A: I’ve developed a love for a few things that I see in the ocean every day here in Maine. Buoys are one thing and native algae and grasses are another. Spend time swimming around, observing these things throughout the year in their habitat, and documenting them when the time and light are right. Noticing how they have grown into their environment and how nature has captured them. For me, both are an ongoing practice and study.

Q: Was the watch comfortable to wear while shooting?

A: SPB297 was very comfortable to wear throughout the day in a number of different scenarios. I was able to seamlessly transition from the studio to shooting on land in my wetsuit and then out to sea. No issues at all as the watch fits comfortably with my wetsuit and camera body.

Q: What was your first impression of the Seiko watch and does anothing special about it?

A: Stylish and high quality with attention to simple details and ease of use. The look and feel is what really stands out: high-end and can be easily pulled on, while it can be worn casually and doesn’t feel overly flashy or heavy.
