With travel back in full swing, AAA Oklahoma is encouraging those planning to fly over Thanksgiving or the year-end holiday to look ahead — and book ahead — to save money and reduce the risk of flight delays and vacation disruptions minimize.

“Flyers have three pain points: increased costs, reduced inventory, and the possibility of delayed or canceled flights,” said Michelle Stinnett, AAA Oklahoma Travel Advisor. “Booking vacation travel now should help address all of these issues.”

Staffing and other pandemic-related issues have dramatically disrupted the airline industry, forcing several major airlines to reduce the number of routes they serve, and fewer routes mean fewer seats. Airfares, which have risen by 20% over the past year, are likely to continue to rise in the coming months.

“By booking air travel now, passengers have more choice and flexibility, increasing the opportunity for a positive, stress-free travel experience,” added Stinnett. “

One of the best ways to minimize hassle is with the TSA PreCheck. Four Metro-OKC AAA stores will host week-long TSA PreCheck enrollment events next month. The first opportunity is next week September 19-23 at AAA Edmond. For the next three consecutive weeks, TSA PreCheck events will be held at AAA Quail Springs, then NW 61st and May Ave. and finally held in Norman. Pre-registration is required for appointments. AAA members and the general public can make appointments in advance and register for the events online. At airports across the country, 95% of TSA PreCheck passengers waited less than five minutes to get through security in August, according to the TSA website. The service is growing in popularity as travelers look for ways to minimize problems during air travel. Travelers with TSA PreCheck get expedited and streamlined screening at airport security. There is no need to take off shoes, light jackets and belts, unpack laptops or 3-1-1 liquids.

AAA Oklahoma travel advisors do not foresee a drop in travel bookings until 2023. Travel has become a top priority for many who have postponed plans during the pandemic.

“Oklahomans are focused on finding ways to control what they can in an unpredictable air travel environment,” Stinnett said.

AAA offers 10 tips to ensure the best flight experience and minimize the risk of disruption: 1. Look for flights that depart in the morning so you have more time throughout the day. Flights later in the day are more prone to an increase in cancellations, changes or delays due to weather, staff shortages or other unforeseen circumstances.

2. Try to fly a day or two before the start of your vacation or your destination so you don’t lose the entire trip if your flight is delayed or disrupted.

3. Plan long layovers of at least two hours to allow time for unexpected delays to catch your connecting flight.

4. Get travel insurance to protect your investment and choose a policy that covers travel disruptions and additional expenses.

5. Sign up for shorter and faster queues for pre-screening programs e.g. B. TSA PreCheck , Clear or Global Entry.

6. Check-in online or via the airline mobile app at least 24 hours in advance, print a backup copy of your boarding pass if possible and take a copy of your e-ticket with you.

7. Plan to arrive at major airports two hours before domestic flights and up to three hours for international flights. Parking garages, TSA security checkpoints, and other airport services can have long lines.

8. Download the Flight Aware app to track your plane’s route throughout the day until your departure. This allows you to determine if there are delays, missed connections or the need to take early action.

9. Download and familiarize yourself with the app of the airline you fly with. Most airlines allow you to check-in for your flight, access boarding passes, track your baggage and change/cancel a flight. Also, some airlines promote inflight entertainment through their app.

10. Check your airline’s consumer protection commitment to understand your rights as a passenger, particularly in relation to delays, cancellations and rebooking requests.

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently launched its Airline Customer Service Dashboard website:, which compares information about services offered by U.S. airlines to reduce the inconvenience for passengers if the cause of a cancellation or delay was due to circumstances within the airline’s control.
