With the Modern warfare 2 With Beta only minutes away at the time of writing (for PlayStation owners, at least), we wanted to put together this guide to bring all of the newly announced mechanics, movement changes, and new perk systems together in one place – and to remind you of everything else that’s left of Modern warfare 2019 same.
This will be helpful for both experienced players and newcomers, especially those who normally take certain aspects of Call of Duty for granted. Developer Infinity Ward has a habit of doing this, and his bold vision for this game isn’t afraid to mess around with series staples.
The Modern Warfare 2 beta will be our first real chance to experience all of these tweaks, big and small, for ourselves and see where each of us lands on each of them. So, without further ado, let’s enumerate what’s changing and what’s staying the same.
The minimap still doesn’t show unsuppressed weapon fire
Arguably one of the most controversial design decisions in Modern Warfare 2019 was changing how the mini-map works. Previously, players firing unsuppressed weapons were automatically displayed as a red dot on the minimap. But Modern Warfare 2019 changed it so they only appear on the newly added compass at the top of the screen.
Modern Warfare 2 follows its predecessor in this area, which means that by default, players will not appear on the minimap when firing their weapons. To bypass this, you need to equip them Perk from a bird’s eye viewthis is an ultimate advantage in Modern Warfare 2 (more on that below).
Bird’s-Eye effectively switches the minimap to its classic behavior, so consider equipping this if you want the classic-style minimap.
The new perk system is unlike anything you’ve seen before in COD
Okay, every Call of Duty had perks, but every studio has their own take on the number, style, and effectiveness of each of them. Infinity Ward’s big perk change in Modern Warfare 2 is a major reinvention of the wheel that will take some time to adjust.
In Modern Warfare 2, you don’t start the match with all the perks you choose. Each player can equip four perks, but not all are active at the start of a game. Instead, the perks are now split into three tiers: Basic, Bonus and Ultimate.
Base Perks are the “free” perks (two) that activate immediately at the beginning of the game. Your bonus perk (one) and ultimate perk (one) are earned as you play instead. The bonus is earned after about four minutes into a game, while the ultimate unlocks after about eight minutes.
You can speed up the process by earning points through kills, assists, captures, and anything else you normally do in a Call of Duty match. At the moment, this timer is reduced by one second for every ten points, and your progression does not reset on death.
There are various perk packs to play with in the beta, and you can create your own. However, there is currently no way to reset perks to the classic style.
You can freely choose between Killstreaks or Scorestreaks
In Modern Warfare 2, you get to pick your poison when it comes to killstreaks and scorestreaks and sidestep this entire debate. There’s a simple toggle in the Streaks menu that converts the required number of kills for each into a score.
You can play with the toggle to see which system works better for you, but of course you can’t change that mid-game – only in the lobby between games. The streaks themselves and their potency remain the same for both options, so you don’t lose/gain anything.
In general, scorestreaks work better for players who enjoy playing the target and tend to be friendlier to casual players and newbies.
Bunny hopping is the new slide canceling
It can’t be a Call of Duty game without questionable movement mechanics that players use and abuse, and Modern Warfare 2 has two! First, There’s bunny hopping, where you jump around the corner and take cover in the middle of a firefight etc.
This is of course not a new tactic and has actually been used quite a bit by aggressive players in Modern Warfare 2019 to thwart the objective of camping players. It’s about as effective in the new game as it seems minimal loss of accuracy during the jump and no cooling down on jump height or jump frequency.
The dreaded slide canceling has been removed, so expect enemies to fly through doors and around corners.
But there is another movement mechanic that you will also see frequently…
Dolphin diving is a thing now
Modern Warfare 2 borrows a bit from classic Treyarch games by implementing a dolphin dive, a movement mechanic that causes your character to quickly hit the deck and coming from a sprint to a prone position.
Tapping the crouch button while sprinting will perform a standard slide while holding it to trigger the dolphin dive. The benefit of a dive is obvious, especially if you’re doing it to get cover quickly.
But you should know that It takes a second for your weapon to come back up at the end of the dive animation, meaning its use as an offensive mechanic is limited.
Swimming and water fighting are big new additions
Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty games typically shy away from swimming and water combat in general. But that changes in Modern Warfare 2 thanks to a host of new systems, tools, and movement abilities designed to help you navigate and fight in the water.
Players can now jump into any body of water deep enough to submerge, swim, or dive. This will make you harder to spot by people on the shore, which is useful if you want to sneak up on someone. You can shoot other swimming players and shoot at people standing on dry land from the water.
Of course, you can also be shot at by anyone who spots you. The only caveat here is that Bullets lose some of their damage and momentum when they hit the water, don’t be surprised if it takes longer to hit a target.
Don’t expect to see swimming in the small 6v6 maps, though. The mechanic was mainly introduced for Ground War and eventually Warzone 2.0. We don’t have access to the latter in this beta, but the former is playable in beta so you can check it out for yourself.
You cannot cancel weapon reloads
This is one of those features that will inevitably divide players. Implemented Infinity Ward staged reloads in Modern Warfare 2. This means that if you interrupt him, you’ll never have to start over again.
The upside is that if you switch weapons or decide to move, etc., your reload animation picks up roughly where it left off. The downside is you cannot cancel a weapon reload once it has started. The only thing you can do is pause it.
Even if you still have rounds in the magazine/chamber, if you’re suddenly surprised by an enemy, you won’t be able to fire again. You also can’t cancel reloading by switching weapons – commonly known as Y/Y cancel. If you do caught reloading, you should probably switch to your sidearm.
Dead Silence is another field upgrade
Infinity Ward appears to be pretty settled in terms of sound deadening benefitsthat is: In Modern Warfare 2 there is none. Gamers who like to rush it will be disappointed to learn this, especially considering their experience in Modern Warfare 2019.
As it stands, the only way to muffle your footstep noise is to use it dead silencea field upgrade that charges over time and can only be used for a limited window of time – unlike perks, which are passive abilities that are always on.
Third-person is back and you can try it out in beta
Longtime Call of Duty players will have fond memories of playing the original Modern Warfare 2 in third person. This was nothing more than a novelty as it simply changed the camera’s perspective – leaving everything else intact.
Infinity Ward chose to do that bring third person back For the new Modern Warfare 2, it’s just been updated to look and feel better. First, the camera has been adjusted to better recognize walls and follow the character’s swing. Aiming down automatically changes the perspective to first-person, similar to Ghost Recon games.
Third-Person is a modifier that can be turned on or off, also in Warzone 2.0. So expect him to show up randomly in playlists over the life of the game. If you want to try it out for yourself, you’ll be happy to hear that third-person mode has been confirmed for beta.
