In her free time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, yoga, weightlifting, pickleball, travel, reading, and hanging out with friends. She has three grown children who live in Colorado and Arizona. This is her first published book, and she has many more intricate real-life stories that affirm that if you follow your intuition and lead with love, compassion, and kindness, you can overcome most of life’s challenges.
This captivating book tells the true story of Emma, a fragile young woman, and her persistent therapist. The story describes the psychologist’s unconventional approaches to inviting her client to recovery and eventual thriving. This work explores the therapeutic process from the perspective of both the client and the therapist. Emma’s personal notes and letters to Dr. Bowers give the reader a unique insight into the minds of therapist and client. Emma had to overcome a tragic childhood, and Dr. Bowers had to overcome self-doubt, frustration, and therapeutic conventions to become an effective remedy for her client.
Readers get tips on how to deal with depression, anxiety and trauma by sharing Emma’s story and that of Dr. Read Bower’s suggestions. The willingness of Dr. Bowers’ ability to trust her intuition and follow her heart, rather than following conventional therapy guidelines, allowed her to forge the therapeutic alliance that saved Emma’s life.
Emma’s challenges of childhood sexual abuse, abandonment, depression, substance abuse, sexual identity confusion, grief and forgiveness are all dealt with with sometimes hair-raising drama and unpredictable chaos throughout their working relationship. It is a tale of triumph, bravery and healing that will leave a deep impression on readers when they converse with Dr. Bowers and Emma ride the emotional rollercoaster.
dr Bowers writes, “This book tells the story of one of my most challenging clients. It is a description of her journey to wellbeing and my experiences as her therapist on a sometimes harrowing roller coaster ride. Choices I Most unusual choices, and both self-defeating and sometimes brilliant choices are captured in the story. I have come to the conclusion that not only do we as therapists love our work, but many of our clients do… I was inspired to read this book writing in the hope that it will be useful to people who have experienced similar moments of self-loathing and despair. Who has not experienced the dark nights of the soul? I also intend for this book to be used by therapists in training, new and experienced therapists, and therapy teachers to stimulate thoughtful reflection and discussion about our profession. I have included discussion questions for each chapter at the end of the book for therapists and anyone interested to think more about what happened and the therapeutic recommendations presented.”
