Thursday: Galway

Nine-year-old Evergreen Surrounding delivered one of the most poignant Galway Festival wins in modern times in the Listed Corrib Fillies Stakes, winning less than 24 hours after the death of her passionate owner-breeder Peter Newell at the age of 71.

Mares who have won five times at List level – and once in Group 3 companies – are usually long retired by the age of nine, but Surrounding was no ordinary mare in Mick Halford’s care.

By Lilbourne Lad and out of a Doubletour mare who was beaten by 93 lengths in her only start in a bumper, the 2019 heroine won Thursday’s Guinness-Irish EBF supported competition.

Newell’s family made it clear that Surrounding should run despite the death of the owner-breeder last night, and the admirable mare responded with the 11th win of her career.

Halford said: “I would say she got a little bit of help from somewhere. I’m sure he’s looking down on us at an emotional time. This mare is heartfelt. She is unbelievable. Her enthusiasm, her solidity – she is amazing I hope this helps lift the spirits of the Newell family.

“Peter has been a huge supporter of ours and this is the best animal they have ever produced in all their years of breeding. She is very special. ronan [Whelan] gave her a great ride.”

Halford added: “We’ve had a quiet year. Our horses were healthy, but we just didn’t have that many. She loves that hill and that wasn’t the biggest surprise in the world but when we have the season we have you need something to change your luck. Hopefully that was it.”

There was drama early in the 7f competition when the Mick Mulvany-trained Red Heel appeared to capsize after a stage and a half of the competition, sidestepping apprentice Wesley Joyce into heavy traffic.

dr IHRB Senior Medical Officer Jennifer Pugh said: “Wesley Joyce was taken to Galway University Hospital for further evaluation following his crash in the fourth race.”

Holian excited after memorable double

Local owner Basil Holian was Ballybrit’s Ladies’ Day toast after registering a memorable doubles match with in-form trainer Peter Fahey in just over half an hour.

Undefeated pursuer Visionarian pleaded for a slant to a top-level company after a smart win in the Class 3 Guinness Open Gate Brewery Novice Chase before the same owner-trainer combination teamed up to land the 1m½f Rockshore Handicap with Soaring Monarch .

The double was particularly sweet for Holian, who hails from Athenry in Galway and represented his county at a small level in tumbling. His company, Westerwood Global, inked a five-year sponsorship deal with Galway’s camogie team (a variant of slingshot) worth €250,000 in January.

“It’s unreal — I died and went to heaven,” Holian said. “It’s a fantastic day. All compliments to Peter Fahey and his wife Ber.”

Fahey could target 134-rated hurdler Visionarian at the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse in December.

It wasn’t looking entirely easy for the 9-2 shot that turned home where he lacked space while making progress inside, but Denis O’Regan stayed cool and got enough of his mount to take the eye-catching second Call me Lyreen.

“Winning a graded race is great, but I have even more thrills for Basil, a big supporter of the shipyard,” said Fahey.

“We always thought this horse would do better over a fence and he’s starting to prove it. He looked like a slow jumper over hurdles, but we trained him over fences once and he was electric. He might end up being a horse for the Drinmore or something like that.”
